Trump defends his executive order restricting immigration from nations that Obama has either bombed or would have liked to bomb. Starbucks says it will hire 10,000 refugees over the next five years, instead of the homeless or jobless veterans.
▶ Economics: Dow closed out at 19,864. Market Watch reports that there could be a selloff in February. Economist John Williams sees some trouble brewing.
▶ Global Issues: The Iranian-backed suicide attack targeting a Saudi frigate off the coast of Yemen on Monday may have been meant for an American warship, according to defense officials. CNBC reports that China is preparing for a potential military clash with the United States, according to an article on the Chinese army’s website. Russia is in biggest Arctic military push since Soviet fall. NATO will not recognize the annexation of Crimea. Security analysts believe that a new yet powerful military and financial block comprising Pakistan, China and Russia has emerged. Iran tests ballistic missile in defiance of UN resolution, US officials say. North Korea appears to be restarting a plutonium reactor just as US Secretary of Defense James Mattis prepares to visit neighboring South Korea and Japan.
